Choosing a Domain Name
|
A domain name is an alphanumeric string of characters between 3 to
67 characters in length. It can contain letters or numbers only, with
the exception of the special character - (called dash or minus sign), but
this character can NOT be the first or the last character of your domain name.
There is no difference between upper and lower case letters.
|
Domain names can have many uses, both for individuals or businesses.
For example how cool would it be to have an e-mail address like john@smith.com
or me@johnsmith.com if your name was John Smith. Apart from being
cool, imagine how easy it would be for people to remember your e-mail
address. Also in the process they will remember you and the name of your site more clearly, or
get in touch with you even weeks after meeting you. This rule applies to your
domain name, as well as your e-mail address. An easy to remember
domain name related to you, can make a big difference.
|
There must be quite a few people out there, who share their names
with you. But there is only one john.com
, one johnsmith.com
, and one john-smith.com , this is why, registering a good domain
name for you or your business as quickly as possible can be very important.
|
There are a few important points to remember when choosing a domain
name. Firstly, the name has to be as short as possible, this way it
will be easier to remember and there will be a reduced chance that,
a potential visitor might make a spelling mistake. Second, the name
must reflect you or your business. A loan company called ABC finance
from Manchaster, might consider names like abc.co.uk
or abc-finance.co.uk
or northwestfinance.co.uk (at the time of writing the last two
names were still available). This way your domain name will be easier
to find as it will be related to what you do. Lastly, the name can be
amusing, interesting different or mysterious, This feature will increase
its recall value. There are too many possibilities with the last option
to go into detail here. In short use your imagination.
|
There is another point you have to consider after choosing your name. That's
the extension you will use with your domain name. The most popular top level
domain extensions are .com(commercial) and .net(network).
these extensions are used by many companies and individuals, who require a global
presence. The extension .org(organisation) never
caught on with the public and is used mainly by government departments and charities.
If you live in the UK, you should consider .co.uk(Uk commercial).
Many Uk consumers prefer to do business with web sites ending with .co.uk
